Course Description

Objectives:

This one year course provides an insight into the caring profession. It equips students with a practical and theoretical introduction to nursing, and health related careers. It is also designed as a programme of preparatory study to enter a degree programme in Nursing Studies or Social Studies.

It is suitable for both school-leavers and experienced mature persons seeking a formal qualification.

Certification:

Certification is based on a number of modular exams, along with on-going assignments and assessments, as required by FETAC. This award was developed through the new FETAC Common Award System and replaces the previous DCHSN award. The total credit value required for this certificate is 120. This will be achieved by completing:

All of the following Components (5x15 credits)
  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Nursing Theory
  • Human Growth & Development
  • Care Skills
  • Work Experience (3 week block placement in a HSE registered care facility)

A minimum of one of the following Components: (15 credits)

(Chosen by college each year)

  • Communications
  • Teamworking
  • Personal Effectiveness
  • Customer Service

A minimum of two of the following Components: (2x15 credits)

(Chosen by college each year)

  • Safety & Health at Work
  • Care Support
  • Social Studies
  • Nutrition
  • I.T level 4 (10 credits)
  • Occupational First Aid (5 credits)

For those wishing to improve their skills and knowledge in certain areas, there may be additional workshops throughout the year such as

  • HACCP
  • Children First
  • Manual Handling
  • Study Skills
  • CAO Workshop

Specific Course Entry Requirements:

  • Successful completion of interview.
  • Candidates must be in a position to obtain Garda Clearance.
  • Candidates must supply two character/work related references.
  • Students must also obtain three weeks practical work experience in a HSE recognised health care facility.
  • 80% attendance is necessary to successfully complete the course.

Progression:

Learners’ who have successfully completed this award could expect to find employment in the health services, hospitals, nursing homes, or in the community.

This award also facilitates entry on a competitive basis to a range of third level institutions nationwide leading to awards at the next or higher levels of the National Framework of Qualifications*.

*Note: All progression routes are subject to certain academic prerequisites. Applicants should have the required minimum qualifications for entry to Third Level institutions. Further details are available from the relevant institutions or from www.cao.ie
