Course DescriptionObjectives: This one year course provides an insight into the caring profession. It equips students with a practical and theoretical introduction to nursing, and health related careers. It is also designed as a programme of preparatory study to enter a degree programme in Nursing Studies or Social Studies. It is suitable for both school-leavers and experienced mature persons seeking a formal qualification. Certification: Certification is based on a number of modular exams, along with on-going assignments and assessments, as required by FETAC. This award was developed through the new FETAC Common Award System and replaces the previous DCHSN award. The total credit value required for this certificate is 120. This will be achieved by completing: All of the following Components (5x15 credits)
A minimum of one of the following Components: (15 credits) (Chosen by college each year)
A minimum of two of the following Components: (2x15 credits) (Chosen by college each year)

Progression: Learners’ who have successfully completed this award could expect to find employment in the health services, hospitals, nursing homes, or in the community. This award also facilitates entry on a competitive basis to a range of third level institutions nationwide leading to awards at the next or higher levels of the National Framework of Qualifications*. *Note: All progression routes are subject to certain academic prerequisites.
