Course Description

Objectives

The purpose of this award is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to work independently and under supervision in a range of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) settings and/or to progress to higher education and training. It is ideal for both school-leavers and for mature persons seeking a formal qualification.

Course Structure

One day Work Experience per week in a recognised childcare facility.

Certification is based on attaining a pass in a number of modular examinations, along with completion of on-going assignments and assessments, as required by FETAC. This award was developed through the new National Common Award System (CAS) and replaces the previous Childcare award. The total credit value required for this certification is 120.

Early Care and Education Practice 15 credits
Early Childhood Education and Play 15 credits
Child Health and Well Being 15 credits
Children with Additional Needs 15 credits
Nutrition 15 credits
Work Experience 15 credits
Communications 15 credits
Information Technology Skills 10 credits
Occupational First Aid 5 credits

Optional Workshops

For those who wish to improve their skills and knowledge in certain areas additional workshops may be provided throughout the year. Possible workshops include:

  • HACCP
  • Children First
  • Manual Handling
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Storytelling
  • Study Skills

Specific Requirements

  • Successful completion of interview
  • Students must obtain practical work experience in a HSE recognised childcare facility
  • Candidates are required to provide Garda Clearance before commencing Work Experience
  • Candidates must supply two character/work-related references

Fees

The Department of Education and Skills PLC Levy of €200 (exemptions apply to certain categories) plus student services charge and materials fee of €300.

Progression

Learners who have successfully completed this award can expect to find employment in a variety of education/care settings within the Irish childcare sector.

This award also facilitates entry on a competitive basis to a range of third level institutions nationwide leading to awards at the next or higher levels of the National Framework of Qualifications.

Applicants are advised to confirm all progression opportunities and details of course entry requirements, including any additional requirements, with the admissions office of individual institutions and third-level colleges and with the CAO.
