“Be Winter Ready” 2012-2013 Information Campaign 

The above campaign was launched by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence and the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport last Friday, 9 November 2012.

 

Through a dedicated website www.winterready.ie, advice is being made available from a number of sources including Government Departments, An Garda Síochána, the Health Service Executive, Local Authorities and the transport providers. The advice has been categorised under various headings including: the Home, Road Safety, Schools, the Farming Community and the Business Sector. A synopsis of the information available has been compiled into a booklet which can be downloaded below.

The main objectives of the campaign are:

·                To provide practical advice on how best to prepare for the coming winter.

·                To ensure the public are aware of where advice and help can be found, if needed.

·                To reassure the public that preparations are being made and arrangements have been put in place to ensure that there will be a coordinated response to severe weather events.

Adult & Further Education Post Leaving Certificate (PLC)

The PLC programme is a full time vocational preparation and training programme that offers young people and adults the opportunity to access and progress in further education or to bridge the gap between school and work.

The programme runs over one or two years (usually one) depending on the course/school. All PLC courses lead to a FETAC Level 5 award.

What are PLC Entry Requirements?
Applicants to PLC courses must normally have attained Leaving Certificate standard. Applications will be considered from mature students who do not meet the normal academic requirements. Applications are processed in the order they are received. All courses are open to male and female applicants.

What courses are available at PLC?
A wide range of courses are available through the 5 second level schools/colleges.

Successful completion of a PLC course can lead to:

  • Direct Employment
  • Trade Apprenticeships
  • Further Education in Third Level Colleges

What will a PLC course cost?
There are no tuition fees for EU Nationals.  Non-EU Nationals who do not meet the exemption requirements are liable for the full tuition fee of €3,653 as per instructions of the Department of Education and Science.

However, there will be a cost to all students for examination fees, books, class materials, field trips and class outings.

Will I be paid while attending a PLC course?
No, but maintenance grants are available for eligible PLC courses, subject to satisfying its terms and conditions. You may also be able to retain certain social welfare payments under the Back to Education Allowance. Long term unemployed people may avail of VTOS.
